What is organic cotton?Cotton is one of the most popular fabrics in the world but has traditionally been grown with the mass use of pesticides and chemicals. Organic cotton however is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers, and build biologically diverse agriculture. Some third-party certification organisations verify that organic producers use only methods and materials allowed in organic production.
Organic cotton for you
Organic cotton makes you feel good because:
is softer and easier on your skin than regular cotton
it's naturally wicking
there aren't any latent pesticides or other chemicals that might disagree with your skin
Organic cotton for the environment
it uses natural pesticides keeping pests off the crops, but not destroying their natural predators
it allows for intercropping with secondary crops grown between and around small plots of cotton. In stark contrast to conventional methods, this way of farming actually promotes biodiversity; organic cotton fields contain a significantly higher number of insect species and potentially allows for a secondary income to farmers
it is sustainable as the soils are fertilised with natural organic materials, which help to give the soil higher humus content - making it better able to retain moisture and its fertility
it tends to be more farmer friendly
